Seaparated from the South Island of New Zealand by Foveaux Strait, Stewart Island covers an area of 1,683 sq. hectares. It has one of the richest seaweed flora's in New Zealand. This is due to its many habitats and the influence of 2 major ocean currents. A wide variety of fish life abounds around the island, some of these being blue cod, trumpeter, jock stewarts, crayfish, scallops, paua (abalone), spiny dog fish, groper, carpet sharks, blue and green lipped mussels to name but a few.
